Description
Traditional scrimshaw is etched on a white surface and inked in black. By using white scrimshaw ink on a black surface, your finished work of art will be uniquely original. At first, it may feel different to ‘think’ in reverse, but I have found it to be fun and very rewarding – with amazing results!
I highly recommend the rich pigments of Dr. Martins’ Hydrus brand of inks. They fit all the criteria for excellent scrimshaw ink – transparent, water-based, finely ground pigment with remarkable permanency.
This ink comes in a one fl. oz bottle with a dropper. The photo shows the smaller bottle.
Tip: I use a piece of glass as a palette for mixing colors. It is 2 ½” x 3″, but about any size will work. I have a piece of white paper taped to the backside. This gives you an accurate measure of your colors as you mix and makes it less messy. I place a drop or 2 of ink on the glass, then use my brush to transfer the ink to the piece.
